Home-made Mincemeat

Have you ever made your own mincemeat? Homemade mincemeat is really simple to make, and is a cut above shop bought mincemeat, and you can adapt your recipe to your taste by adding your favourite fruits and nuts.

An old country tradition is that you get your children involved in stirring up the mix and making a wish each for the festive period – the same applies to making homemade Christmas Cake. It is then (hopefully!) easy to encourage them to try mince pies and other special Christmas food, as they have helped to make it.

Always sterilise your jars by running through a dishwasher cycle or washing in hot soapy water and rinsing in clean water, then placing in the oven at 100 deg C for 15 minutes.

There are two recipes here for mincemeat, one an ‘everyday’ version and the other a ‘luxury’ version.

All the ingredients in the recipes are available in Fred’s or Morrisons in the village. Thanks and a ‘shout out’ also to the REco Store, Tower Business Park, Kelvedon Road, Tiptree, CO5 0LX, info@recostore.co.uk – if you take along your empty jars and containers Elise and her staff will measure out the exact quantities you need for the recipes, thus saving any wastage.
