Seed Swap

Join a world-wide movement

Saving and swapping seeds has been a way for us to preserve and keep alive local and heritage varieties of flowers, herbs and vegetables for centuries. You can join a world-wide movement trying to find alternatives to mass produced, engineered and expensive seeds. – making a difference to global issues at the local level by joining in our Seed Swap project.

Seed Swap Hut

Started by one of our TCP members, Seed Swap is based in a hut made by local carpenters from recycled materials, situated at the edge of the Surgery car park on Tollesbury High Street.

You can drop in your own spare seeds and swap for something you would like to try. A lot of our seeds are locally, organically grown and quite fresh. Some are donated by local garden centres and these can be out of date but are usually still viable. There’s also information on each packet on how to sow and grow the seeds.

Save your seeds

Now is a perfect time to save your own seeds; collect them on a dry sunny day and put in a paper bag and keep them somewhere dry. Shake the seeds out in the bag and then separate the chaff from the seeds, just blow gently on the seeds and the chaff should blow away. Put them in a paper envelope and label them with as much information as you can; name if known, when collected, any comments about colour, form, flavour, how and where they grew…It’s easy to do and fun, just needs some patience and a bit of care…

Seed Swap is all about sharing, getting involved in growing your own flowers, herbs and veg, saving our local heritage of seeds…and saving money…The more people who share their seeds, the more we have to choose from, so if you have spare seed packets lying about or save lots of seeds, why not get swapping!
